CPK (Creatine Phosphokinase)

Type:

Enzyme

CPK is an enzyme found primarily in the heart, brain, and skeletal muscles. It plays a critical role in energy production by facilitating the conversion of creatine to phosphocreatine, which is used by muscles during physical activity.

Primary Function:

Normal Values:

Men: 39-308 U/L
Women: 26-192 U/L

Pathological Values:

>308 U/L in men or > 192 U/L in women (may indicate muscle damage or stress)

Symptoms/Pathology in Deficiency:

While low CPK levels are generally not a concern, extremely low levels may indicate reduced muscle mass or chronic muscle disease.

Symptoms/Pathology in Increase:

Elevated CPK levels can indicate muscle damage due to conditions like myocardial infarction (heart attack), rhabdomyolysis, muscular dystrophy, or intense physical activity. Symptoms of high CPK may include muscle pain, weakness, and dark urine.
