ASAT (Aspartate Aminotransferase)

Type:

Enzyme

Liver function, Can also be found in heart, and skeletal muscle.

ASAT and ALAT are intracellular hepatic enzymes that are released in cases of hepatic cytolysis.

Primary Function:

Normal Values:

10-40 U/L

Pathological Values:

>120 U/L (Elevated ASAT)

Symptoms/Pathology in Deficiency:

Symptoms/Pathology in Increase:

Liver damage, hepatitis, cytolysis, viral infection, drug cytolysis

Slightly elevated levels of ASAT say little.

More elevated values generally indicates liver damage and can be caused by conditions such as hepatitis, fatty liver disease, alcohol abuse, or hepatotoxic medications or in worst case, liver tumors.

Fatigue, jaundice, nausea
